Making the most sustainable Windsurfing products on the market

Sustainability is the most important and pressing challenge of todays mankind to secure a livable mother earth for future generations to come!

Over the last 50 years Windsurfing has developed into a super high tech sport. But let's face it despite what others might tell you with the exception of aluminium booms and extensions Windsurfing products are a "mixture of petrol-based plastic trash". And most times up to 100% of this plastic trash are non-recycled (means "freshly produced") plastics.
At least as of today there are no eco-friendly substitutes existing offering the minimum requirements necessary to design modern Windsurfing products. Or why do you think no one wants to sail with wooden booms, aluminium masts or stretchy sails made of woven fabrics anymore?
There is only one sustainable way out of this dilemma:

MAKING LONGER LASTING PRODUCTS (LONGEVITY = SUSTAINABILITY)
A high performance product that lasts longer and best case can even be put into additional use on the second hand market is the best and only way to conserve the resources of our earth.
Of course light components have a massive impact on the performance and handling of your rig. That's why light weight is always on our briefing list when designing and engineering new products. And DUOTONE products are among or in many cases are the lightest on the market.
But durability and longevity were and will ALWAYS be on top of our priority list. Our industry leading warranty extensions bear witness to this philosophy:
- 2 year unconditional warranty on almost every hardware product (masts, booms and extensions+bases).
- 5 year warranty on 80% of our sails.
On sails we cannot emphasize enough that especially reducing the thickness of the monofilm and the XPly laminate has a radical influence on the longevity/sustainability. Reducing the film thickness by 50% reduces the UV-stability by 70%. Just to shortterm impress magazine testers or customers some brands use up to 70% thinner laminates/films than we do. This is not our understanding of sustainability.

DOING MORE
However, since we are fully aware of the importance of sustainability, we cannot simply stop here.
>> Only we have stopped using any plastic for packaging our sails. This saves approx. 5 sqm of plastic film and foam per sail.
>> Only our aluminium products (booms and extensions+bases) are manufactured in a CO2 neutral production facility.
>> Only our aluminium products (booms and extensions+bases) are produced in Germany using 100% European raw materials in order to keep shipping distances (to our manufacture and then to our central warehouse) at a minimum.
>> Only our sail bags are made out of 100% recycled plastic.
>> Only we compensate all carbon emissions caused by our sails during manufacture and transport by supporting a hydropower carbon offset project in Sri Lanka, the country where our sails are produced.

Power.XT 2.0

An inspiring (r)evolution – the POWER.XT 2.0 can do much more and do it better than the previous model. And as POWER.XT 2.0 SLS RDM 36 it is also the most lightweight ratchet extension of all time!
Beyond the basic idea, the POWER.XT 2.0 has almost nothing in common with the previous model any more. From the extremely solid ratchet mechanism plus lever to the simplified release mechanism, the high-strength Lyros® Dyneema harness downhaul lines and the option to retrofit the damper function – everything has been radically upgraded. The latest version comes with a completely new adjustment ring, which offers a unique feature: based on the tried-and-tested SDM adjustment ring, the RDM version now for the first time ensures that the aluminum tube does not come into contact with the mast anymore, which avoids any contact corrosion. No other RDM extension can offer that! In order to guarantee the same durability despite the reduced diameter, a double-walled sandwich construction of 7075 aluminum outer tube and ovalized T8 inner tube is used (patent pending).
For many years, the POWER.XT has been the benchmark when it comes to extensions with trimming tools. Those who use it will never want to do without it again. Thanks to the integrated lever, it overcomes even the strongest downhaul forces, enabling perfect re-trimming or fine-tuning even when on the water. Even children could handle the extreme luff tension of modern slalom sails, each profile can be adjusted to millimetre precision in a matter of seconds. The 15 cm long lever and the ratio of 1:60 enable trimming without any noticeable effort.

NOTE ON DELIVERY TIMES

The global pandemic continues to cause raw material shortages, restrictions at our manufacturers and greatly extended shipping times, which doesn’t allow a constant and planned flow of deliveries. Therefore please note that although we are doing everything we can to get you the equipment you want, availability is limited, especially at product launches.

Tips & Tricks

Using the ratchet is so easy, why should I use the regular cleat at all?

Cause if you only use the ratchet the rope will always get loaded at the same spot when fully downhauled. This concentrated load will eventually squeeze down that part of the rope. When that happens the teeth of the clamping wheel cannot transport/tension the rope anymore.

The easiest way to avoid a fast partial rope wear and tear is to always use the regular cleat to pre-tension your sail.
Also it's much faster to pre-tension the sail using the regular cleat since each ratchet click results in only 8 mm of rope movement.

Exchanging the Power.XT rope ►video

Your POWER.XT comes with a special Dyneema rope which is extremely low stretch and abrasion resistant. However, due to the high downhaul tension on the clamping wheel even this rope is subject to a certain degree of wear and tear. It won't tear but wears out and becomes thinner.
When the rope starts to slip while downhauling the sail, it is time to exchange it. Hint: when the rope starts to slide you can still finish your session if you press the rope firmly into the clamping wheel using your fingernail during the tensioning process.
As a short term solution in principle, any 4mm rope is suitable as a replacement rope. However, we strongly recommend using the original POWER.XT Dyneema rope, as it's custom-designed to fit with the clamping wheel teeth ensuring maximum grip and durability.
Here you'll find all POWER.XT 2.0 spares

When exchanging the rope, please make sure that the correct feed-through hole is used towards the regular cleat, otherwise the rope will cross over. When threading the rope make sure not to start from the regular cleat but to thread towards it.
- Cross hole (starting close to the ratchet wheel): used for all 0° oriented tack rollers (e.g. Duotone, GA/Gaastra, Goya, Neil Pryde)
- Straight through-hole: used for all 90° twisted tack rollers (e.g. Gun Sails, Loft, Naish)

Over time even stainless steel and aluminium components get affected by salt water. Therefore after holidays in salt water please put the POWER.XT into a bucket full of sweet water.

Once or twice a year you should give your POWER.XT the following special treatment:

  • Hose down your POWER.XT with a hard water jet and then let it dry well (e.g. put it on the heater for 1 day).
  • Now turn the POWER.XT upside-down.
  • Get Silicone spay and spray it into the gaps inbetween the black bars, the clamping wheel and the big white lever (see pic). Move the ratchet and repeat spraying several times. This way the oil gets onto the axle.
  • All moving parts on the big white lever should be sprayed as well.
  • Finally wipe the POWER.XT clean with a cloth to remove all excess oil. Especially the teeth of the clamping wheel and the standard cleat must be free of oil.

Attention: Do NOT attempt to disassemble the POWER.XT by removing the axle bolt! Without detailed instructions, this will most likely result in the loss of parts risking to destroy the function of your POWER.XT.

After a while of flawless function the Power.XT ratchet doesn't release anymore ►video

Over 9 years of experience with the majority of PWA riders, selected premium centers and countless end consumers around the world have proven that version 2.0 is bombproof and works flawless in all kind of conditions and with any type of sail out there.

The only thing we occasionally hear is that after a couple of seasons sometimes the ratchet doesn't release anymore. For the ratchet to work the small pin at the bottom of the white ratchet lever needs to spring back towards the bottom end of the slot.
As soon as the pin looses its springiness the ratchet refuses to release.

Experience has shown that there are 2 reasons for the pin to loose its springiness:

  1. You think you need to push the lever as hard as you can to release the tension whereas in fact it's not much power necessary to release the ratchet.

  2. In case the ratchet doesn't receive any "care" from you (see under maintance) over time salt and sand increase the friction of the system up to a point that you need to push super hard with the lever for the ratchet to work.

Fortunately there's a very simple solution to get your POWER.XT 2.0 back up and running within 5 minutes by replacing the ratchet lever (get the spare part here)

  • Use 2 allen keys (size 5) to remove the RIGHT-hand side screw of the axle bolt.
  • CAREFULLY slide the axle bolt towards the left-hand side but just far enough to get the lever off the axle bolt (attention: do NOT slide the axle bolt any further so that the ratchet wheel falls out!).
  • Now slide the new lever in, push the axle bolt back in place and secure it with the screws again.

Can I really use the full adjustment range of the mast extension

With alloy booms we don't recommend to use the whole extension range - at least if you're a heavy guy and/or are sailing in heavy conditions.
However with mast extensions you can use the entire range. At least our tests and experience have shown no difference in durability by doing so.

PIONEERING DAMPING TECHNOLOGY! All UNI.XT and POWER.XT 2.0 extensions can be upgraded with the unique Duotone SHOX suspension system (except AERO). SHOX is the first integrated shock absorber, which adds a chassis to the board similar to a full-suspension on a mountain bike. Especially in choppy conditions it smooths out the board and the rig, absorbing chop and the impact after landing. Tests in all leading Windsurf-magazines have proven that the rig doesn’t bump, the rider can convert the wind power much more effective into acceleration making you a proven 2-3 knots faster, and also preserves the equipment and your joints. Whether speed, racing or freeride, the SHOX.UPGRADE.KIT definitely guarantees more control, more speed and more comfort.
During wave sailing the SHOX suspension system provides cushioned landings and increased board control when going down-the-line as well as when crossing the white water. The upgrade is easily done in a few simple steps. The new, very stiff cup ensures that the suspension tube runs with absolutely no friction, the damping elements respond more sensitively and thereby creates a more enjoyable ride. No wonder that almost all of our top athletes swear by the SHOX option rather than going without!

NOW COMPATIBLE WITH ALL SAIL BRANDS! The POWER.XT 2.0 features a stainless-steel open pulley enabling loop-loop-go rigging – the fastest and most comfortable way to rig your sail! The POWER.XT 2.0 is now the first choice even for sails with twisted tack-rollers (e.g. Loft, Naish, Severne). Yet their rope distribution has been taken into account during construction. This tack-roller orientation does not permit a loop-loop-go rigging though, means the rope needs to be threaded.

SHOX UPGRADE KIT

The unique DUOTONE SHOX suspension system can be retrofitted to all POWER.XT 2.0 SDM models. SHOX is the first shock absorber to be integrated into the extension which gives the windsurfing board a real chassis, just like the full suspension used in mountain bikes.

When in choppy waters in particular, it gives stability to your board and rig, withstands gusts of wind and absorbs energy when landing jumps. Tests conducted by all the leading windsurfing magazines have confirmed that, with this feature, riders can convert wind pressure more effectively into forward pull, making them 2–3 knots faster and protecting the materials and joints. Whether you have a speed, racing or freeride setup, the POWER.XT 2.0 combined with the SHOX UPGRADE KIT adds more control, boosts speed and provides greater rider comfort.

And when you’re on the wave, the SHOX suspension system ensures softer landings and enhanced board control both down the line and when sailing through breaking waves cresting a breaking wave .The SHOX UPGRADE KIT is of course available for POWER.XT 2.0 SDM of all lengths.
