Depending on your riding style and spot, you can choose from different Kiteboard types:
Twintip Kiteboards: ideal for beginners and freeriders, rideable in both directions
Directional Kiteboards / Surfboards: perfect for waves and downwind sessions
Foilboards: for effortless gliding in light wind
The individual boards can then be further subdivided into categories such as freeride, freestyle, waves, racing, big wave etc., there is more information on this in the overview pages for kiteboards.
At Duotone, you’ll find all variations from agile freestyle boards to lightweight surf-style Kiteboards for wave riders.
Twintips are bidirectional boards which means it doesn’t matter which end of the board points in which direction.
Surfboards and foilboards are unidirectional or directional boards. These have one end that always points in the direction of travel (the so-called “nose”) and one end which makes it impossible to ride if it is pointing in the direction of travel (the so-called “tail”).
Surfboards have fins at the end or tail of the board. Foilboards have a foil mast located on the tail.
Beginner Kiteboards are typically larger, wider, and offer plenty of buoyancy and stability.
Our recommendations:
Duotone Gonzales: forgiving, comfortable, and durable
Duotone Soleil: specially designed for lighter riders
Kiteboards with soft flex: reduce mistakes and make water starts easier
Beginners benefit from boards that offer good control, low weight, and early planing perfect for learning safely.
The right Kiteboard size largely depends on body weight.
As a rule of thumb:
| Weight (kg) | Kiteboard Size (cm) |
|---|---|
| up to 60 kg | 128–134 cm |
| 60–75 kg | 135–139 cm |
| 75–90 kg | 140–145 cm |
| over 90 kg | 145–150 cm |
A larger Kiteboard makes starting easier, provides more lift, and glides more stably, perfect for newcomers.
With more experience, you can switch to smaller boards for increased control and agility.
Understanding how different Kiteboards are built helps you choose the perfect board for your riding style and conditions. Each type (Twintip Kiteboards, surfboards, and foilboards) has a unique construction that influences performance, flex, and durability.
Twintip Kiteboards
Twintip Kiteboards are typically constructed from multiple layers of high-quality materials. Most models feature a wooden core, which provides natural flex and responsiveness. Layers of fibreglass and carbon are added to enhance strength, control, and pop.
The exact material composition varies depending on the board’s purpose, for example, freeride Twintips focus on comfort and stability, while freestyle boards are tuned for power and precision.
Surfboards for Kitesurfing
Kite surfboards (also known as directional boards) are primarily built with a lightweight EPS core. To improve stability and durability, layers of bamboo, Technora fibres, and cork are added. This combination ensures a balanced feel underfoot, excellent grip in turns, and smoother handling in waves making them ideal for riders who love surf-style kiteboarding.
Foilboards for Kitesurfing
Duotone Foilboards feature an advanced full carbon construction, delivering maximum stiffness with minimal weight. The design includes increased front-foot volume for better balance and optimized rails that enhance upwind performance and control. The result is a high-performance foilboard that glides effortlessly even in light winds and reacts instantly to rider input.
Depending on your Kiteboard type, you can choose between different binding options each offering unique advantages in control, comfort, and safety.
Twintip Kiteboards
With Twintip Kiteboards, you can ride with boots or straps.
Boots (inspired by wakeboarding) give you a firm connection to the board for maximum control and stability, especially during landings. However, they can increase the risk of injury in crashes and require a reinforced Kiteboard to handle the added pressure.
Straps offer a looser fit, making it easier to perform board-off tricks and release quickly during falls, though it’s easier to lose the board in the water.
Surfboards
For Kite Surfboards, you can use straps, pads, or wax, depending on your style and preference.
While straps provide more control in big waves, strapless riding has become the most popular trend. Many riders now prefer pads for their reliable grip and low maintenance, while wax still appeals to purists seeking a traditional surf feel.
Foilboards
Foilboards can be ridden with two, three, or no straps, based on your riding style.
Racers often prefer multiple straps for stability and power transfer.
Freeriders and trick riders may choose a strapless setup for more freedom and maneuverability.
Even the best Kiteboards need maintenance from time to time. If for example the finn of your board gets damaged you can easily replace the affected parts.
