SPENCER BROTHERS

Finn and Jeffrey Spencer are not just top riders; they play an enormous role in Duotone’s Research & Development (R&D) process – now and in the future. The Hawaiian-born brothers are at the forefront of shaping the future of Duotone Wing & Foiling. Their experience and test feedback not only helps to fine-tune our wings and foils, but they are also in charge of our board designs for Wing Foiling, Surf Foiling, Downwind Foiling and Pump Foiling. With their enormous product knowledge and foiling skills, they are ensuring every product meets the demands of our customers, from newbie to the highest performing riders.

As athletes they are also competing in the GWA wave circle and have the chance to constantly test new gear in different conditions to those in their Hawaiian home waters. These firsthand insights contribute to groundbreaking innovations like the Skybrid mid-length boards, the Crush Prone Foil board or our Float wave win or the Downwinder, but also pretty much all other products of the Duotone Wing and Foiling line-up. Working closely with our inhouse product Team and other Duotone designers such as Ken Winner, they’re shaping the future of the sport from the water up.

The ability to analyze and push prototypes to the edge right in front of their home on Maui allows us to create some of the most advanced foiling gear on the market.

The Spencer´s product feedback directly influences our design work, and they are working very closely together with our wing designer Ken Winner (who is also based on Maui), our foil designer Jerome Bonieux as well as our Duotone R&D office team with Klaas Voget, Max Pajank and Alex Held.

Both were born in Canada, but moved to Hawaii as babies. Growing up in the powerful surf of Maui, the brothers always had a natural connection to the ocean from a very young age. They quickly became pioneers in the foiling scene, from Wing Foiling to Downwind Foiling and Surf Foiling and their effortless style impresses everyone. They are are a source of inspiration for many aspiring younger foilers and lots of our Duotone Wing & Foiling Young Blood riders.

With always new prototypes in the works and the latest advancements in Wing & Foiling technology, the Spencer brothers continue to design, test, refine, and innovate. Whether they're charging massive swells, racing at top speeds, or working on the next innovative design, one thing is certain: Finn and Jeffrey Spencer are shaping the future of Duotone Wing & Foiling.

With this video we would like to share some insights from Finn and Jeffrey Spencer, and their journey towards the future of Wing & Foiling R&D.

»I’ll never forget landing the first-ever Backloop in Wing Foiling. That moment gave me the confidence to push for even more new tricks—and it inspired others too. It felt like the beginning of a new chapter for what’s possible in the sport.«

Interview with Finn & Jeffrey:

How would you describe your childhood, growing up on Maui with daily access to the ocean?
Finn: Growing up on Maui and spending time in the ocean was a dream. It all started with playing in the shorebreak at our local beach, then progressed to Surfing, Stand-Up Paddling, and eventually Foiling.

You started Wing Foiling early on when the sport was still very small. How did you get into it?
Jeffrey: Our first experience was riding downwind with a wing, and we enjoyed how fun and unique it was. The real hook came when we started jumping and riding waves - that’s when we knew this was something special.

You ride all types of foils, from Prone and SUP Downwind to Pump Foiling, and even surfed Jaws. What has Wing Foiling added to your time on the water?
Finn: Wing Foiling gives us even more water time, especially on windy days - which on Maui is about 90% of the time. It allows us to explore new spots, and ride waves up and down the coast.

Jeffrey, you were the first to land a backflip in Wing Foiling some years back! Yes, I will never forget this! That moment gave me the confidence to push for even more new

You’re known as the Spencer Boys. How do you support and push each other?
Finn & Jeffrey: Having each other makes everything easier, from learning tricks to filming and pushing our limits. We also enjoy working together and we complement each other really well with what we do.

Where do you get your ideas for new shapes and how do you make sure they will work? We’re in close contact with the rest of the R&D team and exchange a lot about shapes with them but also talk to the other team riders and seek input from our different local spots and different level riders. Our dad for example looks for different qualities in a board for his cruising on flatwater or in smaller waves compared to us when we go to the waves of Hookipa for example. Our goal is always to make things easier – for us, but also for our dad and his mates. The less you need to focus on your gear, the more you can focus on your riding. That pretty much counts for all levels of riders.
Ultimately, we always test all new ideas against our favorite boards and what we currently have in production. And if the new ideas work well, they flow into the next round of protos.

What is your favorite Wing Foiling conditions and ideal gear setup? We’re writing this interview from Cabo Verde – and we would say the conditions here are hard to beat. We’ve used the new Carve 3.0 D/LAB 500 here and that foil just works insanely good in the powerful waves of Ponta Preta. Sky Style SLS 35l together with the new Float Wing, it’s a magic combo! That wing just follows effortlessly on the wave, and you can 100% focus on your ride.
