PODIUM TIME IN TENERIFE

For the first time in 29 years, the PWA returned to Tenerife as a Grand Slam event. For years, only the Wave discipline took place at El Médano’s famous spot, Cabezo, but this time racing made a comeback with the SlalomX discipline. Over 10 days, we saw plenty of action and we can already spill the tea: Team Duotone did great!

While the forecast and conditions weren't as great as Tenerife can be in the summer, in the Pro men + women wave they still managed to squeeze out the single and just over half of the double elimination!

Duotone:
When conditions aren’t perfect, it takes even more from the riders to stand out compared to the others! On the first day of wave action, it was especially Liam Dunkerbeck who won his quarter-final with one of the highest heat scores and seemed to be one of the main contenders for the final. However, the next day he couldn’t find the same rhythm and had to settle for 7th place, which surely left Liam hungry for more, knowing he could have made the final.

Making it to the final and being on an insanely impressive form here: since 2012, Victor Fernandez has been on the podium every time the Tenerife World Cup took place! What an incredible run of results. Finishing 2nd this year, we think it’s safe to say the style he showed riding the waves was from another class. It looked like he was perfectly tuned in with his new 2026 GRIP [TRI] D/LAB!

Victor:
'I had an amazing time during the World Cup in Tenerife. I found myself very comfortable riding on my new big gear (98l GRIP [TRI] D/LAB & 5.3 and 5.0 D/LAB sails). I am very happy to get 2nd place, I love windsurfing in Cabezo and I look forward to get ready for the world cups in Sylt and Maui'

There was not only success in the men’s division, Duotone was also well represented in the women’s division, with three girls in the top 10 and Alexia Kiefer Quintana taking 2nd place!

PWA on Alexia:
'Alexia Kiefer Quintana (Duotone Windsurfing) was Offringa’s biggest competition in the final with the 20-year-old leading Heat 23 for much of the opening half of the showpiece. The young Spaniard produced one of the turns of the day to open her account, but unfortunately couldn’t back it up, but still earned 5.25 points for one turn. Kiefer Quintana was still lacking a jump score late into the final and after two failed backloop attempts had to settle for a 2.75 point forward, which wasn’t enough to trouble Offringa, but if she had’ve managed to stick one of those backloops it may well have been a different story. Kiefer Quintana is also guaranteed to extend her podium streak - now seven and counting - as she keeps herself firmly in the world title race conversation.'

Alexia:
'After a calm week waiting for conditions, we managed to complete the single elimination, in which I finished second! It wasn’t easy at all since the wind was very light, but I’m really happy with my result. Now it’s time to get ready for Sylt next month!'

Duotone:
Beside Alexia's amazing performance it was Lisa Wermeister finishing in a strong 7th place and Maria Behrens in 9th, who got some nice complements from the PWA: 'Maria Behrens was the standout sailor in the women’s opening round as the 23-year-old earned two out of the top three wave scores to comfortably progress into the top 16. Behrens showed excellent wave selection and was then able to use those scoring opportunities to maximum effect as she racked up a 7.37 and a 6.63.'

And in slalom, it was Jordy Vonk who bounced back from his crash in Fuerteventura to break his 4th-place curse and finish on the podium!

Jordy:
'What an absolute rollercoaster these last weeks! From being in the best form of my life in Fuerteventura, to crashing and having to retire from the event… then a quick trip home for treatments to get just good enough to race in Tenerife. I raced four eliminations at the start of the event, winning yet another elimination, followed by six days of waiting with a highly pregnant wife at home… crazy!

It had been six years since my last PWA podium, and after finishing in 4th place more than ten times in my career, you really start to doubt how to finally step up onto that podium. To finally do it again was… emotional!

In general, it was a shame we couldn’t race more, as I believe both the fans were ready to watch more slalom and I would have loved to race more, especially when the wind was a bit stronger. But the outcome was great, so I’m not complaining!

Third in the PWA Tenerife and therefore third in the SlalomX year ranking 2025… Thanks to Duotone for providing me with the tools to do this!'

What a summer it has been on the PWA World Tour! Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Tenerife showcased windsurfing in the best possible way, and we hope you enjoyed the show. While the Wave, Freestyle, and Foil riders get ready for Sylt, we say a huge congratulations to Jordy Vonk for finishing third in the SlalomX: it was a pleasure seeing you so incredibly fast!
