Matahi hails from a family deeply rooted in the surfing culture of Tahiti. As the younger brother of renowned surfer Manoa Drollet and the son of Bjarn Drollet, an early pioneer of surfing, Matahi grew up in the world of waves. By the age of 8, he was already navigating the powerful swells of Teahupo'o, developing a mastery of one of the world’s most challenging breaks.
His talent quickly captured the spotlight when, at just 16 years old, he won the prestigious XXL Award for one of the biggest waves ridden at Teahupo'o - making him the youngest surfer ever to achieve this milestone. In 2019, he entered the Tahiti Pro Teahupo'o, where he competed against the best surfers in the world.
Expanding his passion for the ocean, Matahi has embraced the realm of Surf Foiling, bringing his expertise and fearless approach to this fast-evolving sport. His ability to merge traditional surfing with cutting-edge foil riding makes him a perfect fit for our team.
We’re beyond excited to welcome Matahi Drollet to our team and look forward to seeing him continue to push boundaries and inspire the next generation of Surfers and Foilers worldwide!
Matahi, welcome to the team! You’ve already made a name for yourself as a world-class surfer. How does Surf Foiling compare?
"Surf Foiling is an amazing way for me to stay connected to the ocean, especially when the waves are under 4 ft or not breaking properly. As a professional surfer, I love how foiling allows me to approach waves differently and draw new lines that wouldn’t be possible on a regular surfboard. It opens a whole new dimension of riding, and there’s still so much to explore and innovate in the world of foiling."
Coming from Tahiti, home to some of the most famous waves in the world, how has your background in Surfing shaped your approach to Surf Foiling?
"Growing up in Tahiti, I’ve always been drawn to hollow, barreling waves, so it feels natural to bring that mindset into foiling. I love pushing the limits and exploring how a foil can perform in heavier conditions, finding new lines and possibilities that others might not have tried yet. Foiling allows me to approach waves in a completely different way, and that challenge keeps it exciting."
You’re now part of the Duotone team! How does it feel to join the brand?
"I’m super excited to join the Duotone team! They’re the best when it comes to Wing Foilling, Foiling, Kiting, and so much more. But what really excites me is the opportunity to help develop the best surf foils gear. There’s so much potential in this sport, and I can’t wait to contribute and push the boundaries even further!"

What are your goals for 2025?
"My main goal is to get some perfect barrels on my foil. I want to push the limits of what’s possible in foil surfing, explore heavier waves, and refine my technique to make foiling in barrels more accessible and stylish. There’s still so much to discover, and I’m excited for the challenge!"
Do you have any advice for Surfers looking to get into Foiling?
"For me, hydrofoils are a must-have for any surfer. They open new possibilities, new perspectives on different spots, and unlock sensations you just can’t get on a regular surfboard. Foiling challenges the way you see and ride waves, and once you experience it, it completely changes your approach to the ocean."
How does it feel to represent Tahiti on the international stage?
"I feel truly honored to share what we have at home with the world through my passion for surfing and foiling. Tahiti is such a special place, and I feel incredibly lucky to have grown up here. Being able to bring that energy and vibe to people around the world is something I’m really grateful for."
