When and where did you start Wing Foiling? I started Wing Foiling in February 2023 in my home spot in Rhosneigr. I think it’s the perfect spot because you always get clean consistent wind and if you get washed to the beach you end up on a sandy bottom. When I started my dad helped me by lending me his wings and Conor at my local surf shop Funsport by lending me a board to use.
What’s your watersports history – from which side did you enter Winging?
Before I started Wing Foiling I only windsurfed. I loved Windsurfing but found it difficult to have fun in light wind. So, I decided to start Wing Foiling. As soon as I got my first flight I was addicted. Now, with Wing Foiling and Windsurfing, it enables me to get on the water and enjoy a massive range of conditions.
What do you love about Wing Foiling?
I love Wing Foiling because it gives you a feeling of freedom. I also love that the gear is so light and free. Every time I go for a jump it gives me an adrenaline rush that no other sport can give me. As well the feeling of putting the wing down and gliding with the foil for hours is unmatchable.
What’s your favourite conditions?
My favourite conditions are when the wind is blowing from the right so (starboard tack) with a good 25-30 knots of wind. This is because I can use the wave on the way out to give me more height when I go for jumps or tricks. I also love it when there is a big ground swell and light wind. This is because you can ride the waves and its so light there is no apparent wind in the wing. It feels like you are endlessly gliding and carving for hours.
What’s your top advice for a beginner?
My top advice for a beginner is to start on a big board and foil in lights winds. So, they can learn the correct technique how to get going. Also, more advice is to spend plenty of hours on the water because the more time you put in the more, you’ll improve.
Boom or handles?
I think boom is better for freestyle because when you do one-handed tricks, it allows you to grab anywhere on the boom. But I think handles are amazing for cruising around and for freeride.
