6 PODIUMS IN POZO

WITH A 3rd PLACE FOR VICTOR FERNANDEZ AND 5 PODIUMS IN THE YOUTH DIVISION, IT WAS AN INCREDIBLE WEEK IN POZO IZQUIERDO FOR #TEAMDUOTONE. THE WEEK STARTED WITH LIGHTER THAN NORMAL CONDITIONS FOR POZO, BUT THE FINAL DAY DELIVERED CLASSIC POZO CONDITIONS TO END THE WEEK ON A HIGH!

2019 was the last time we came to Gran Canaria for a PWA World Cup – back then Victor Fernandez just missed out on the podium finishing 4th and we swept up a raft of podiums across the Youth Divisions. 3 years on, its plenty of the same names, but a different story!

For Victor Fernandez, the challenging conditions provided by the single elimination definitely suited him – round after round, continually busting out the second highest heat scores, only being topped by Philip Koster – the eventual winner of the single elimination. It was the ultimate match up – 6 Gran Canaria World Cup wins each, but who would finish the week the King of Pozo?

Marc Pare was another of the standout riders of the single elimination – making the challenging conditions look epic as advanced to the quarter finals. Here he met Philip Koster, where despite putting down the highest scoring double forward of the elimination, Koster’s explosive wave riding gave him the edge and saw Pare finish 5th in the single elimination.

Elsewhere, PWA Debutant Lucas Meldrum was knocked out by local rider Sanchez in the first round, whilst Arthur Arutkin was narrowly taken down by Leon Jamaer.

It was the #YoungBlood Team who were the real stars this week however. Peter Gobisch was up first and put on an excellent display of riding in his heats to take the U15 Boys title. Then it was over to the U17 Boys where an all Duotone semi-final made it impossible for a Duotone 1-2, and it was Tobias Bjornaa who was victorious over team-mate Carlos Kiefer-Quintana, and they went on to finish 1st and 3rd respectively.

In the U20 Girls, it was once again and all Duotone match up in Heat 1 with Alexia Kiefer-Quintana facing Lisa Wermeister. The 2019 U15 Vice Champion, Alexia, put on an impressive display, sending her straight through to the final, whilst Lisa went up against Julia Pasquale (2019 U17 Champion) in the repechage. The local rider showed her strength on home turf, and Pasquale joined Kiefer in the final where they finished 3rd and 1st respectively.

There were no opportunities for a comeback in the junior divisions as the conditions didn’t allow for any further competition, but for the U20 girls, they had a second opportunity to show off their skills in the Pro Women’s division. U20 Champion, Alexia Kiefer-Quintana advanced the furthest making it through to the quarter finals to give her a 5th place in the single elimination.

After 8 days of unusually light Pozo conditions, the final day saw the return of the classic Pozo and we were treated to a full power day of action! Huge stalled forwards, table doubles and even some pushloop-forwards – it was certainly a day to remember! For #TeamDuotone it was an opportunity to improve on some great results from the single elimination and see how far they could advance. Arthur Arutkin was the biggest climber, making it from the first round up to 17th. Unfortunately an on form Marcilo Browne put a stop to both Marc Pare and Victor Fernandez’s challenges and they finished 7th and 3rd respectively.

For Victor Fernandez, 11 times Pozo Podium finisher, it was another trophy to add to the cabinet, but he also took home one more trophy – the Redbull Rockets! Every rider in the top 16 was fitted with a phone running the Surfr App measuring the height of their jumps. Marc Pare took the lead during the single elimination with a huge stalled double forward but with the windier conditions during the double elimination, the level was going through the roof! Multiple 8m+ jumps were recorded, but it was in the second to last heat of the day that Victor Fernandez took his opportunity and sent an enormous 8.9m stalled forward to steal the win and take home the Redbull Rockets trophy!
