JORDY STARTS SEASON STRONG
Despite fewer windy days than expected in Guadeloupe, Jordy Vonk kicked off the season with an impressive 4th-place finish.
The PWA World Tour kicked off its Foil Slalom discipline in Guadeloupe, the scenic French Caribbean island known for its consistent trade winds. In the lead-up to the event, conditions looked promising with steady breezes. However, just as the competition began, an unfortunate weather system moved in, limiting the fleet to only three full eliminations over the five-day window.
After securing a solid 4th-place finish, we caught up with Jordy to hear his thoughts on the season opener.

How was the experience of racing in the Caribbean?
Jordy: 'It's a dream place for sure! No matter if the sun was shining or if it was raining, you can go out in your boardshorts and you will be comfortable. The water was like a heathed pool, we were rigging under the palm trees on a beautiful beach. Once I arrived we could straight go on the water and see how beautiful it is to windsurf there, I've been looking at windguru for weeks and I saw it was green all the time, to arrive there and the wind stopping after only one training day felt sooooo unlucky, but happy the wind returned for one day during the competition where we could squeeze out 3 eliminations so we could show what a great playground Guadeloupe can be.'
What gear were you using during the event?
Jordy: 'I basically had the Warp_Foil 6.4 - 7.5 and 8.7 always ready to go together with the Falcon_Foil 169. In the first elimination I've been on 8.7 all the time but the winds were picking up extremely right before the winners final! Sadly I didn't have time to change down to 7.5 while some others had caddies bringing smaller sails.... luckily the 8.7 has a huge range and I managed to hold on! The second elimination I switched to 6.4 which was perfect for the whole elimination. After the wind dropping again I was on the 8.7 for the rest of the event, so mostly I was on the biggest sail I own!
Are you satisfied with your 4th-place finish?
Jordy: 'yes, although I'm sure a podium finish was possible! It was looking like the last day we could finish at least the 4th elimination and with me qualifying for the last winners final and the third-place finisher Alex not making it into the final I was ready to give it all to step up on the podium, but sadly the wind didn't hold long enough. With only three eliminations and no discard everything could have happened and therefor I'm super happy to go home with a 4th place, I saw that I had the pace to be on the podium and with that positive feeling I will go into the next foil events, everytime missing out on that podium just makes me more and more hungry for it!'
What’s coming up next for you on the tour?
Jordy: 'It's now first time to catch up on work, be at home a bit with the family before preparing for the next event: the Defi Wind. I will be racing there on FIN only so it's time to swap my foil equipment for my Warp_Fin and Falcon_Fin and get used to that again. After Defi it also looks like we will mainly be doing slalomX in the summer, which I really look forward to so for all fin fans out there, you.'ll see me on the water in the next months instead of flying above!'

Local Hero Rises
Home advantage or simply a big step up in performance? Maybe both. Sacha Fortune delivered his best result yet in his short time on tour, finishing 11th overall. He came very close to qualifying for his first-ever winners' final and celebrated his first top-10 finish by placing 2nd in the losers' final. All in all, Sacha had a strong event, and it’s great to see this young Frenchman making solid progress.
Luck wasn't on everyone's side
On the flip side, Daniele Benedetti ended up on the unlucky side of things. A crash caused by seaweed, foil issues, and missing the start of his quarterfinal due to circumstances beyond his control all worked against him. With no discards in play, there was no way to recover. He’ll be looking for redemption later in the season, as everyone knows he’s one of the guys to watch for.
