PEDRO MATOS WINS BIG!

The season officially kicked off in one of the most iconic wave locations on the planet—Ponta Preta, Sal, Cape Verde. Known for its powerful, peeling right-handers and cross-offshore winds, Ponta Preta never fails to deliver, pushing the limits of wave-riding at every turn. This year’s event brought together an elite roster of 25 men and 18 women from 15 countries, all ready to battle it out at the opening stop of the tour.

However, the competition missed one familiar face: Sal local and crowd favourite Matchu Lopes, who made history here in 2023 as the first backside rider ever to claim victory at Ponta Preta, unfortunately was sidelined this year due to injury.

POWER, FLOW & PRECISION: CAMILLE LOSSERAND KICKS OFF SEASON WITH 3RD PLACE PODIUM FINISH!

Right from the outset, the judges set a clear standard across both divisions: power, flow, speed, and smart wave selection were key. Control in critical sections, stylish air tricks, smooth floaters, and clean barrels would be rewarded.

In the women’s field, the level was sky-high, with athletes charging hard in the heavy, technical conditions at Ponta Preta.

Duotone’s Camille Losserand (SUI) made her mark early, delivering a standout performance in Round 3 with a solid win over Brazilian veteran and 5x GKA Freestyle World Champion Bruna Kajiya. Camille combined sharp wave selection with her smooth, flowing style to advance confidently to the semi-finals, where she faced defending event winner and three-time World Champion Moona Whyte (USA).

Despite a strong effort and solid scores, Moona advanced, but Camille wasn’t done yet. In the Mini-Final, she stayed composed, focused, and stylish—securing a well-deserved 3rd place podium finish. A perfect start to Camille’s 2025 season, showing she’s ready to challenge for the top spots this year.

A big congratulations also to Moona Whyte, who took the win, and Capucine Delannoy (FRA), finishing second—setting the stage for an exciting women’s title race ahead.

»I’m thrilled with my 3rd place at this first World Tour stop of the year here in Ponta Preta, Cabo Verde! I decided to arrive two weeks ahead of the competition to focus on improving my switch stance and getting more comfortable with it. Training at a spot like this definitely raised the challenge level. Very happy with how I performed overall, and now it’s time to push even harder for the upcoming events! Feeling grateful. «

EARLY ROUNDS: DUOTONE'S STRONG START

Brazilian powerhouse Pedro Matos wasted no time showing his intent. In Round 3, he faced Cape Verde’s legend Mitu Monteiro—a heat that had everyone glued to the action. With precision wave selection and aggressive yet fluid turns, Pedro landed an incredible 8.50-point wave, eliminating Mitu in front of his home crowd and advancing to the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, James Carew, known for his raw power and fearless approach, advanced smoothly through his early heats, handling Ponta Preta’s heavy sections with trademark determination. Teammate Sebastian Ribeiro, the Whizzard of kitesurfing and one of the tour’s most stylish and technical riders, also impressed early on, riding with flow and seamless control in the tricky conditions.

QUARTERFINAL SHOWDOWN: CAREW VS RIBEIRO

One of the event’s most intense moments came when James Carew and Sebastian Ribeiro faced off in Quarterfinal Heat 2—a true Duotone clash of titans. Both riders started strong, exchanging mid-range scores while hunting for set waves. Then, Ribeiro raised the stakes, dropping a massive 9.17-point ride, one of the highest single wave scores of the event. Carew fought back relentlessly, but despite scouring the lineup, couldn’t find a wave to match. Ribeiro advanced, and Carew exited earlier than expected—but no doubt, he’ll be hungrier than ever at the next stop.

SEMI-FINALS: RIBEIRO PUSHES LIMITS

Sebastian Ribeiro carried his momentum into the semi-finals against Cape Verde’s defending champ, Airton Cozzolino. Throughout the heat, Ribeiro held the upper hand, combining clean, vertical hits with impeccable timing. It looked like Sebastian had one foot in the final—until Cozzolino pulled off a clutch last wave, scoring 8.70 and narrowly knocking Ribeiro out in a heart-stopping finish.

In the Mini-Final against fellow Brazilian and current World Champion Gabriel Benetton, despite laying down two solid scores, luck wasn’t on Sebastian’s side, and he narrowly missed out, finishing 4th overall. A fantastic performance nonetheless, reaffirming his place as one of the top contenders this season. We're super proud of you, Sebastian!

»I’m beyond stoked with my performance here in Cabo Verde! Winning this event is a dream, and with it being one of the hardest stops of the year, beating a local makes it even sweeter. The energy of the crowd makes it tough, so to pull it off is a big accomplishment. I want to thank God, my family, friends, Duotone, and all my sponsors for their support. It’s a great start to the season, but the mission continues. I’m keeping this mindset for the rest of the year. The focus is to become the World Champion—let's go!«
