Rome wasn’t built in a day and we are taking the same approach, implementing proven, positive and sustainable change at every opportunity.


However, we don’t want to promise a top-of-the-line product and claim it’s totally eco-friendly, but we are looking at how to deliver exactly that in the coming years.

Sometimes balancing the qualities of performance, durability and sustainability is one of the most difficult aspects. We strive to use as many sustainable materials as possible, but we trust our lives to this equipment, so we must value performance foremost. We test new materials and production processes against these criteria and strive to make the most sustainable products possible without sacrificing performance or durability.

Trinity TX is a 3 × 2 canopy material which is designed with a high density structure. It is made of high tenacity polyester yarn. 3 yarns run horizontally for optimized prevention against damage and earing. This results in a crisp rigidity which guarantees direct and precise steering due to the stiffness that is created vertically. Only 2 yarns run vertically which results in greater horizontal flexibility. The end result is that you get a reactive canopy profile that also saves weight. In comparison to a 4 × 4 canopy material Trinity TX has a weight savings of up to 20 %. The unique double coating process ensures that each individual yarn is covered and protected (yarn coating) before being woven into one fabric. With the second coating of the surface of the whole fabric the canopy develops an ultra crisp and direct response to steering. Thanks to the double coating and the 3 × 2 yarn structure Trinity TX is long lasting, super strong and resilient to potential rips and tears. It is developed in collaboration with Teijin and is exclusively implemented in Duotone kites.



Dyneema® Fiber is a synthetic chemical fiber based on polyethylene with an ultrahigh molar mass (Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene = UHMW-PE). Belonging to the group of HPPE (High Performance Polyethylene) fibers, Dyneema provides extremely high longitudinal strength due to its molecular alignment. Related to its mass, Dyneema is 40 % stronger than Aramid, 60 % stronger than carbon fiber and glass fiber, almost 5 times stronger than polyamide, polyester or polypropylene fiber and up to 15 times stronger than steel. Due to its high resilience, even a small diameter of Dyneema has an extremely high breaking load. The fiber is extremely light, provides great strength, and is resistant to stretching, abrasion, and UV light. Dyneema is used for the lines at Duotone.

Cork is harvested from the bark of cork oak trees grown exclusively in the harsh environs of the Mediterranean Sea. The bark of cork oaks shows a unique warp structure which is built of tiny cells. Each cell has the shape of a 14-sided polyhedron and is filled with a mixture of gas. The characteristics of cork result from its structure and the chemical setting of its extremely strong, flexible cell membrane which is waterproof and airtight. Additionally, cork is super lightweight, has outstanding elasticity and rebounding characteristics, and great durability. Duotone uses cork for the cork shock absorber in the heel area of all our Surfboards. It allows the boards to absorb shock like a PU board with minimal to no heel denting, thanks to the underlying reinforcements and the remarkable memory properties of cork.


Bamboos are evergreen perennial flowering plants that include some of the fastest-growing plants in the world. Certain species of bamboo grow up to 91 cm (36″) within a day, at a rate of almost 4 cm ( 1.6″ ) an hour. Bamboo has a higher specific compressive strength than wood, brick or concrete, and a specific tensile strength that rivals steel. At Duotone we use bamboo reinforcements under the cork in our Pro Surfboards for its resilience. Our Classic Construction surfboards are fully wrapped in bamboo to create a solid outer shell for high impact resistance and good flex properties.

Carbon, from the Latin carbo – ‘coal’ – is a chemical element which is nonmetallic and tetravalent. TeXtreme® Carbon is a special type of carbon spread tow reinforcement which is a uniquely adaptable, safe and ultra-light supportive solution for carbon fiber composites. It is a ± 45 ° grid fabric, the typical chess board pattern. TeXtreme Spread Tow Grid can be highly tailored to meet specific needs such as increasing torsional stiffness with minimum weight increase. It offers excellent stability and a special flex pattern. Duotone uses TeXtreme Spread Tow Grid for making ultra-light composite Twin Tips like the Jaime Textreme, the Spike Textreme and the all-new Select Textreme and Soleil Textreme.

We strive to minimize the footprint of our shipping whenever possible. Our primary objectives are to make our packaging smaller and lighter so less fuel is consumed transporting our products and to eliminate air shipments.

The unique Flexi-Hex design is made from cardboard, a product already widely used in packaging but redisigned in a cool and clever way to add strength and durability, especially for surfboard packaging. The result is a strong reliable material which can reduce damage to boards in transit or whilst traveling. The strength of Felxi-Hex means overall less packaging is required making it a cost effective environmental solution. Most importantly it can reduce the need for single use plastic in many packaging systems.

Perfect fit

The hexagonal cellular structure of Flexi-Hex allows flexibility to fit almost any shape board. To allow for varying sizes Flexi-Hex is made of open ended modular sleeves, cut to size and fixed at the join point. The adaptability of the sleeves result in the system being ideal for all board sizes of the whole Duotone surfboard range. Once nested on top of each other, the system creates 30mm of seperation between boards, further protecting them during traveling.

Therefore we decided to supporting organizations that fight global warming. 


So we started to calculate and offset the carbon emissions caused by our products and processes by supporting recognized carbon offset projects. 

Besides avoidance and reduction, offsetting carbon emissions represents an additional important step in comprehensive climate protection.

Greenhouse gases like CO2 disperse uniformly throughout the atmosphere, which means the concentration of greenhouse gases is approximately the same all over the planet.


Thus, the location on Earth where emissions are generated or saved is irrelevant when it comes to the global concentration of greenhouse gases and the greenhouse effect.


That is why emissions that cannot be avoided locally can be mathematically offset through climate protection measures at another location.

We take these efforts very seriously because we are responsible for ensuring that also future generations can experience the stoke of surfing elements.

how does a carbon offset project work?

Carbon offset projects demonstrably save greenhouse gases through activities such as afforestation or renewable energies.

Independent organizations such as TÜV, SGS, PwC, and others check the exact volume saved. The project operator can finance the project through the sale of certified emission reductions. Only projects requiring additional financial support are recognized as carbon offset projects

Criteria for carbon offset projects:
Carbon offset projects must meet internationally recognized standards. The most important criteria here are:

a) Additionality
It must be ensured that the project can only be realized if it receives additional financing through emissions trading. This means the project must be reliant upon emissions trading in order to cover its financial needs.

b) Exclusion of double counting
It must be ensured that the carbon emissions saved are only counted once — by the certificate owner. In particular, this means that certificates may only be sold once and then have to be retired.

c) Permanence
Emissions savings must take place permanently. For example, carbon sequestration in forests must be long-term in nature. A reforested area that is turned back into a livestock pasture through slash-and-burn farming a few years later cannot receive recognition as a carbon offset project.

d) Auditing on a regular basis by independent third parties
Carbon offset projects must be audited in regular intervals according to the criteria listed above. Independent third parties such as TÜV, SGS, or PwC perform these audits. Audits like these retroactively determine the actual volume of carbon emissions saved.

Companies, processes and products are termed "climate neutral" when their carbon emissions have been calculated and offset by supporting recognized carbon offset projects. Besides avoidance and reduction, offsetting carbon emissions represents an additional important step in comprehensive climate protection. 

Our products are rendered climate neutral in three steps:

Step 1: Calculating emissions
We have calculated the relevant carbon emissions of our company, reduced them as much as possible, and calculated the emissions generated by our products. 

The product carbon footprint is calculated based on factors such as raw materials, production, and logistics. In addition we take our general business activities into account, such as administration and business travels.

Step 2: Offsetting emissions
Carbon offset projects save or sequestrate emissions through measures such as afforestation or the replacement of fossil fuel technologies through innovative, climate-friendly alternatives. By supporting one of these projects, you can offset the carbon emissions caused by the production, packaging and transportation of our products. All projects are regularly audited by independent organizations and certified according to international standards, meaning that you can be sure the measures are being implemented on site.

Supported Project

Since September 2009, the small hydroelectric power plant in southern Sri Lanka has been supplying clean electricity to the island. With a capacity of 6.5 megawatts, it uses the water of the Kuru Ganga river near Kuruwita in the Ratnapura district to generate emission-free energy.

The project counts as a run-of-river power plant, which means that the water only has to be dammed during dry periods and by a small weir. Thus the environmental influences remain almost neutral, fish stocks and the entire ecosystem are not endangered. The power plant generates around 19 gigawatt hours per year for Sri Lanka's power grid. These replace electricity from thermal power plants that were previously used to generate electricity in Sri Lanka. The earnings obtained by the carbon offset project made the construction and operation of the new power plant possible – and, as well, some improvements for the people living in the project area.

The ocean is our playground, our race track and relaxation zone, our source of inspiration and thrill. We love it. Not only for the endless opportunities it offers in regard to kiting but also for the power, strength, and beauty it exudes. Without it kiteboarding wouldn’t be the same. Yet this essential part of our lives is seriously threatened. Huge amounts of garbage, especially plastic, are endangering our oceans and the wildlife living in it. By now, plastic makes up for most of the marine litter worldwide. Experts estimate it at millions of tons. And those numbers are growing.  


According to the UN more than 8 million tons of plastic leak into the ocean each year – equal to dumping a garbage truck of plastic every minute. It is so much that you can see it from outer space. In some places the garbage builds up to “islands of trash” which cover huge areas of the sea, some of them bigger than the entire country of Germany. If we continue dumping items such as plastic bottles, bags, and cups after a single use at our current rate, estimates suggest that by 2050 oceans will carry more plastic than fish.
