RULES & ETIQUETTE

Foiling opens up many new possibilities and ways to have fun on the water. Good surf etiquette is mostly based on respect and the rules aren't difficult to learn. There are enough waves for everyone, so let’s keep wing foiling safe and spread positive vibes!

ENTER THE WATER

Entering the water on a wave spot can be quite tricky. There are a few things you should be aware of when you are dealing with a shore break. Here are the most important ones to get you into the water without damaging your gear and putting yourself or people around you in danger.

CATCH YOUR FIRST WAVE

Catching your first wave will be the ultimate feeling of wing foiling. Feeling the push of a wave while having your wing fly beside you and simply flying over the water will raise your excitement of foiling to new heights. Make sure your jibes in flatwater and your foil control are on point before attempting your first wave rides!

CROSSING WAVES

Crossing waves is not only essential when riding waves but also at spots with shore break. The bigger and steeper the wave that you are crossing gets, the more challenging it can get.

CROSSING WHITE WATER

Crossing white water on your foil can be essential to your sessions when riding certain spots. Good control of your foil and flight height are essential skills needed to pass breaking waves.

KICKING OUT

Kicking out of a wave can be easy at some spots, but quite tricky and essential to avoid hitting the beach or reef on other spots. Knowing when to kick out of a wave will not save your gear, but also avoid getting washed on a close out or to hurt yourself when hitting a reef or beach.

WAVE SELECTION

Maximizing the fun factor on a wave and avoiding unpleasant situations in the surf depends a lot on your wave knowledge. Every wave behaves differently and it’s important to know which waves are the right ones to ride with your foil and which ones are better left unridden.

GETTING WASHED

Getting washed with your Wing Foiling gear can be quite intimidating the first couple of times. That's why we want to give a few simple tips on how to react when getting caught in some white water. These tips won’t 100% prevent you from injuries or gear damage but can reduce the risk!

7 CLIPS - WAVE RIDING & AERIALS

RIDING FRONTSIDE

Riding waves on your frontside is the most comfortable and the favorable stance for most people to ride a wave. Facing the wave helps you to anticipate different sections of a wave and to place your turns on the right spot of a wave. For your first sessions in waves, look for spots with slow rolling, 0,5 to 1m waves that are not closing out on a beach or reef.

RIDING BACKSIDE

Riding a wave on your backside is slightly more difficult than on your frontside, yet still relatively easy when winging in comparison to backside riding when surfing, kitesurfing or windsurfing.

JIBE IN WAVES

A good jibing technique is crucial when riding waves. A jibe will not only help you to catch waves and go back out after riding a wave but also help you to escape an approaching wave that is too big to cross. Be sure to practice your jibes in flat water first, before going out into the waves.

TACK INTO A WAVE

Tacking into a wave is a maneuver you’ll need when riding in the surf. A tack is not only used to get into a wave but also to get upwind and properly position yourself before entering the wave.

TURN INTO WHITEWATER

Placing a turn on a broken section of a wave can be done to finish off a wave in style. However, start off trying this move on small sections of a wave as you will have to navigate through a lot of turbulence on your foil.

BASIC AIR

A straight air on a wave without the use of your wing is a very cool and relatively easy move to learn when done on the right section of a wave.

AERIAL GRAB

Adding grabs will add even more style to your airs. Depending on the grab, a very simple move can turn into a super technical one. The Melon grab is a fun one to start with while the slob grab is a very stylish grab also done in surfing.
