Behind the Design of the 2025 Dice SLS

In this installment of Behind the Design we dive into the design philosophy behind the 2025 Duotone Dice SLS. Known for its versatility, the Dice SLS has long been a favorite among riders who demand a kite that excels in freestyle, powerful loops, and even wave riding and this years model aims to push the envelope even further. We sat down with the lead designer on the project, Manuel Zwinz at Duotone to discuss the design goals, the technical changes, and how the new Dice SLS stands out in the Duotone line up..

Could you share the design goals and what you wanted to change for this year's Dice SLS?

For the new Dice SLS, we focused on enhancing the low-end power and improving its jumping capabilities, even in what I'd call more “normal” conditions. Another priority was making the kite easier and more playful in strong winds while maintaining that classic Dice performance. We also spent a lot of focus to improve the Dice SLS's performance in lighter wind conditions. The previous model needed quite a bit of wind to really come alive—at 70kg, I would need at least 25 knots to start having fun with jumps and loops.

How did you achieve those changes? What technical adjustments were made to improve the handling and performance?

The changes involved a lot of fine-tuning, we looked at the overall design, including aspects like the canopy shape and the kite's bridle system, to optimize how it handles in various wind conditions. The result is a kite that’s not only easier to control in strong winds but also more responsive and fun to fly across the board.

The Dice SLS has always been known for its versatility—great for freestyle, powerful loops, and even mixing it up in the waves. Does this new model carry through those same characteristics?

Absolutely, though we did make some adjustments. Over the past couple of years, the Dice became very focused on Big Air, which caused it to lose a bit of its versatility. With this new model, we're bringing back some of that all-around capability. I see the new Dice SLS excelling in three main areas: powerful kite loops, freestyle, and waves.

For powerful kite loops, the Dice still delivers that classic pull and power that some riders really enjoy. In freestyle, the kite sits deeper in the window, giving it excellent pop and slack, which is crucial for unhooked maneuvers. As for wave riding, I think this is where the kite has seen the most improvement. Especially in the smaller sizes, it drifts well and moves smoothly through the wind window—perfect for side onshore conditions where you need to move the kite a lot.

Who would be the ideal user for the Dice SLS, and how does it fit within the Duotone lineup compared to the classic Dice and other models?

The Dice SLS is really for the progressive rider who wants one kite that can do it all—Big Air, freestyle, and wave riding. With the classic Dice being phased out, it was important for us to make the Dice SLS a bit more user-friendly. It now sits somewhere between the old Dice Original and the previous Dice SLS, offering a broader appeal while still delivering top-tier performance.

What are your recommended setups in terms of bar and line lengths, air pressures, and steering options on the tips?

The setups are as versatile as the kite itself. For sizes 10 meters and smaller, we recommend using the small Click Bar with 22-meter lines. For sizes 11 to 13 meters, the medium Click Bar with 24-meter lines is ideal. But there’s room for customization depending on your preference. For example, you could ride a 13m on the hard setting with a small Click Bar and 22m lines for freestyle, or use a 7m on the fast setting with a medium Click Bar for waves. The kite is designed to be tuned to your personal preference and use case, making it adaptable for any condition or style of riding.
