ONE HOUR CLASSIC 2022

IT WAS A WEEKEND TO REMEMBER FOR #TEAMDUOTONE’S JORDY VONK AS HE TOOK HOME THE PRESTIGIOUS ONE HOUR CLASSIC TROPHY, NOT ONLY IN THE RICHLY HISTORIC FIN SLALOM COMPETITION, BUT ALSO THE FOILING DIVISION TOO! WHAT’S MORE, JORDY BEAT THE LAST 4 PWA SLALOM WORLD CHAMPIONS TO ACHIEVE THIS IMPRESSIVE VICTORY. ALSO COLLECTING PODIUM FINISHES THIS WEEKEND WAS MARION MORTEFON, CLAIMING 2 X 2ND PLACES.

Spread across three days, the One Hour Classic is one of the most famous, and toughest, competitions in windsurfing. With races lasting nearly twice as long as the Defi Wind – competitors must complete as many laps of the course, reaching across Lake Garda, within one hour. The person to complete as many laps as possible in the quickest time wins the race. However despite it being a 3 day competition, with racing every day, there’s a twist - only the race with the most amount of laps completed counts! It sounds a bit complicated (and it is!) but the only thing you really need to know is to win you have to be the fastest and push yourself and your gear to its absolute maximum for over 1 hour!

Friday was forecast to be the windiest day of the weekend and therefore with the format of this event being as it is, it was potentially going to be the most important as it was likely that these would be the races where the most laps were completed. The secret to the One Hour is to go big or go home and therefore Jordy chose his biggest fin sail – WARP_FIN 20.22 8.4 with the Fanatic Falcon 140 as his weapons of choice. With the PWA rule changes favouring the foil in these conditions, unfortunately Pierre and Marion Mortefon were not quite as ready for the lightwind fin racing and had to scramble together some big gear to compete. Preparation paid off for the Dutchman and Jordy raced to victory in the first race of the event, completing 19 laps in 01:01:00. Marion led the women’s race all the way until the final gybe, where coming off the plane allowed Czech rider, Adela Raskova, also of Duotone, to sneak through and take the win!

Jordy's favourite win of the weekend however was the final fin race, where he dominated the whole field to win by 1 minute 20 seconds ahead of the next competitor! Marion also took the win in this race, however it was not a fast enough time to take the event victory away from Adela.

Next up it was the turn of the foil. The weapon of choice for Jordy was the WARP_FOIL 20.22 6.9 and for Marion it was the WARP_FOIL 20.22 5.9. Both riders fighting it out at the front of their respective fleets on Day 1 with Jordy coming out eventual winner, meanwhile Marion just lost out to Blanca Alabau to finish 2nd. Finishing just outside of the podium places was Pierre Mortefon and Adela Raskova, both in 4th place.

It was certainly not all over after the first race however, with two further days of competition ahead. Whilst the windier conditions ultimately favoured the fastest times, some riders were still able to go faster in subsequent races and the battles were certainly still on! Despite not counting towards the overall result, Marion took victory on Day 2 and a further 2nd place on Day 3.
