Hi Laurent!  We are so excited to get to know more about you so tell us, where are you from and how do you know Tom Hebert?

Hello Everyone, I’m from New-Caledonia. I have known Tom since adolescence, we hang out with the same friends and share the same passions. He is a little brother that I saw evolving and performing in kiteboarding and I’m proud to share this experience with him today.

How did it come together that you would create the soundtrack for Tom’s new videos and also play such a cool role in each of them?

We talked about it quickly several years ago without actually taking action. I had the feeling that I wanted to improve in music production before committing to the project. Now, I have found my way by mixing my two passions, music and sliding and I want to ride in this niche. After the final result, I owe it to the whole team because I did my part and they put me in the spotlight and I saw it as the accomplishment of several years of work. A big thank you to the Duotone team!

Is creating music just a passion for you or is it also your career?

It’s a passion where I apply myself as if it were a real job, given the time I devote to it. Music makes me live incredible moments like answering your interview, I make music in a small room and live on a very small island in the Pacific and getting to make music for your brand motivates me to live from my passion.

Where do you find your inspiration to create music?

Inspiration is curious, it can happen anytime and anywhere, at work, before sleep, after a session... You start by singing a melody or throwing words around and then you hear it in your head, just asking to come out. What’s cool is having the technological means to quickly transform inspiration into sound.

We heard that your music is all over the New Cal radio stations, what was it like to hear yourself on the radio for the first time?

It’s so exciting! You feel like a little star because your friends, your family are all calling you. You do interviews, it’s a magical moment for an artist.

Tom told us that the two of you created all of these songs in your home studio.  Tell us a little about this process…

I wanted to master all of the parts of a musical production, but the recording remained for me an unknown and vast world. I recommend learning it for any artist. You can develop your creation much further with current tools. Personally I work with Logic Pro X and Native instrument. It is for this reason that with the guys from my group “The Groovin’ Mozs”, we created our home studio. It’s a long and difficult experience cause you have to learn a lot, it’s quite the job! I still have a lot to learn to improve. I work with Damien Raynaud a friend living in Los Angeles and he masters my sounds. It’s much simpler these days with the internet.

What’s it like to have Tom on the mic?

The featuring with Tom? Insane, he is very creative and amazing. He manages his Tom’s Kitchen episodes to perfection. For me, it was mandatory that he sings in the songs. We wrote the lyrics together because we talked about his lifestyle, our lifestyle, the “New Cal style”. I discovered that he shared the same madness as me, so we had a lot of fun.

How long did it take to create the full soundtrack for the series?

I took four months to create the songs, I like to take my time. The global health situation inspired me for the last song, I called it "Monkey Cage". Having more time, I finished it in two weeks. "I don’t wanna be stranded in a monkey cage ..." this sentence describes my way of life and my way of seeing my creation in music. I do not have only one style, if I’m with my guitar on the boat watching my friends surf, the melody sounds in reggae, and so let's go!

Any other new songs coming soon?

Yes, other songs will arrive soon. I work on them with "The Groovin’ Mozs ". The influences will be Australian Rock, Reggae, Rap and Electro.

Each episode is like a music video.  Which came first, the script for the video or the lyrics for the music?

It is true! It’s the first thing I thought of when I saw the result, yeah buddy this is my music video! But that's my goal, Duotone has good equipment for filming, good riders and the mix is fabulous! I love rap, but I have less gangster lyrics because I have not had this way of life, so my message is about riding. For me this is the future, we are slowly coming to the Olympic games, there are many more people participating, there are more skateparks, wakeparks, surfparks, and brands that are more and more present and innovate in the material. It's just the dream of being able to participate in this development via music.

Do you also Kiteboard?  If so, what’s your style?

I am a beginner, but I love it. I take the time during my lunch break to get on the water. I have been surfing and skating since I was very young and I remember my first kite lesson in 2018, I said to myself "Dood’s you're an idiot!", I waited too long to practice. I have a Duotone 10 Rebel and for me, it’s like surfing a 2.50 m wave, it’s powerful!

Anything else you want to share?

My dream is to play music at sliding events. In 2011, with my former reggae group “Soul Sindikate and Dub Trooper”, we played at a surf festival in Biarritz and it was full of good vibes and I understood where I felt good. I know what you mean, you know what I mean, we ride on one life and so... let’s set the tone!

Thank you Laurent!
