GKA wrap up Sylt

The Duotone team once again put on a show of dominance at the first round of the 2021 GKA Surf World Tour in Sylt in the North of Germany with a complete Duotone sweep of the podium. JAMES CAREW took the win with a strong start toward his bid for the 2021 world title. Brazilian teammate, Pedro Matos took second place after beating teammate AIRTON COZZOLINO in a superclose semi-final heat. Airton Cozzolino went on to win the small final to round out the top three.

Today is a step in the right direction, there’s still a long way to go and we have more events to come, but I’ve been training hard and it feels good to be on top!

The riders battled it out in challenging 25 to 30-knot conditions with cross onshore winds and waves. The judging criteria saw a 50-50 divide between wave riding and strapless freestyle, allowing the opportunity for the most complete rider to shine in the conditions. With two waves and two strapless tricks counting towards the overall heat scores, riders were given 6 minutes to perform their best two strapless freestyle moves and 8 minutes to score their best two waves.

James was the only rider during the event to consistently score above 30 points in all of his heats and showcased an incredible display of skill and control. He demonstrated that he is a serious threat for the title and strong no matter what the conditions in both waves and freestyle.

Lighter wind conditions greeted the riders for the Best Trick and Airton Cozzolino was fired up and ready for some redemption! Airton put on an explosive display to secure first place with an impressive ride also from teammate Matchu Lopes hot on Airton’s heels, with some technical moves and landing a flat 3 in the final!
