PUMP FOILING FAQ
Pump Foiling offers various advantages, like independence from wind and weather as well as a variety of spots where this Foiling discipline can be practiced. These factors contribute to the growing popularity of Pump Foiling. Another advantage is the relatively low amount of gear required for Pump Foiling. Pump Foiling also has extremely positive effects on fitness.
However, the right start, the necessary balance and the pumping itself can be a challenge for beginners and often require several attempts to master the technique.
Pump Foiling is best learned in specialized courses and training sessions. Some of our Duotone Pro Centers offer targeted Pump Foil courses. Experience in other Foiling disciplines can help you make progress more quickly. A fundamental understanding of how to pump a foil and build speed can be acquired through Wing Foiling, which can then be applied to Pump Foiling. It's essential to pay attention to the appropriate protective gear: a helmet and impact vest are crucial for beginners in Pump Foiling.
When choosing a spot for Pump Foiling, pay special attention to a suitable platform, swimming island, or the right launch dock that fits your stance (Regular or Goofy). The ideal height for the dock is about 10 cm below the length of your mast. An ideal area is a section of the dock where you can easily place the front wing under the dock or platform during the start. It's advisable to have 2 to 3 meters of space to run up at the beginning.
Always be aware of surrounding obstacles when starting: there should be no people swimming or being in the water nearby. It's also important to have sufficient water depth so that your foil does not touch the bottom, providing you with enough water for crashing. Additionally, conditions with little to no wind and as calm water as possible are recommended.
Solid foiling abilities and a fundamental understanding of foils are essential preconditions for Pump Foiling. Additionally, experience in other board sports such as snowboarding, skateboarding, or surfing is beneficial, as a general comfort on boards is crucial for success in Pump Foiling. Before your first Pump Foiling attempts, it's advisable to watch tutorials to internalize each step from starting to pumping the board.
