Get to know Cyril Coste, the mastermind behind the new Duotone Foil Assist concept. Cyril, please tell us something about your background in watersports. I was a professional kiteboarder between the ages of 15 and 25, competing in the Freestyle discipline on the KiteWorld Tour. Around the age of 20 I startedworking for a kite company inMaui designing kites and boards. I grew up in the north of France, which is not a dream place. Being a pro kiteboarder gave me the opportunity to live the life I dreamed of in Maui and work in the business. On Maui, I got into waveriding a lot more and started stand-up paddling in the waves because I personally didn’t like crowds at that age and wanted to be away from people. Waveriding with the SUP opened up spots that weren’t crowded with surfers. And then came the time when I started doing more kite foiling - and I got totally hooked on foiling. At a really early stage of foil development, I put a foil under my SUP. That was it. Since that time I have been fully involved in foiling. What makes you so crazy about foiling? I think the purity of the glide and the feeling of it. I really love cruising on the foil. It’s not about the speed for me. I got into waves early with the foil, having the smallest foil possible. The wing or prone foiling didn’t really exist at that time. How did the development of your foils begin? After living on Maui, I decided to move to New Caledonia and started developing foils. It was around this time that Kai Lenny first surfed on foils. I jumped on the bandwagon and created a foil brand named after my son Takuma. Since then, I have been totally addicted to foiling.
